Amateur Radio Equipment in Vehicles
UK regulations which came into force on 1st Oct 2002 apply to the installation of radio transmitters in most passenger cars made after 1st Jan 1996.
Amateur radio equipment installed in a car does not need to be 'e' marked if any of the following apply:
- The car was manufactured before 1st Jan 1996.
- The car was manufactured on or after 1st Jan 1996 but the model was type-approved before 1st Jan 1996.
- The radio equipment is a radio amateur's 'one-off' construction installed by him or her in his or her own vehicle.
- The radio equipment is 'legacy' equipment, i.e. sold as new before 1st Oct 2002 or sold second hand after that date.
If a radio amateur buys a new amateur transceiver for installation in a model of car that was type-approved on or after 1st Jan 1996, then to comply with the amended UK Construction and Use Regulations, the transceiver must be 'e' marked.
Whether or not the equipment is required to be 'e' marked, it needs to be installed in accordance with equipment and vehicle manufacturer recommendations and any relevant Codes of practice, such that vehicle electronic systems are not put at risk. Specialist advice should be sought if there is any doubt on this. Further information on Automotive EMC for Radio Amateurs is available in EMC Committee leaflet EMC06.
