A collaboration project for all

Radio Amateurs, who have been participating in the 5MHz Experiment since 2002, have amassed data comprising over 30,000 radio contacts and 300,000 signal reports of three radio beacons located across the UK.  This database is growing daily as the experiment continues.

A team is now being put together to analyse this data and you may be able to help, as there is a lot of work to be shared as well as a wide range of skills required.

There is something for everyone, ranging from those who have a little time to offer with access to basic computer facilities that provide e-mail and web-browsing, to those with more time available, or perhaps more sophisticated computer facilities and capabilities. We also need a few with really specialist knowledge!

What we need to join the project team are people who can offer one (or more!) of following skills:

data handling coupled with Amateur radio knowledge

keyboard data entry

checking of data

interpreting and correction of data such as QTH Locator, aerial, callsign, etc.

programming

stand-alone programs to convert data types

programs that can extract and process data from databases such as MS ACCESS

spreadsheeting

checking of data

interpreting and correction of data such as QTH Locator, aerial, callsign, etc.

databasing

SQL expertise

propagation physics

ground and sky-wave propagation theory

propagation indices

mathematics

statistical analysis techniques

multivariable analysis methods

Remember the basic minimum requirement to join the team is an e-mail/web-browsing capability and a desire to work collaboratively in a team via the Internet.

Formation and management of the Group

Individual Amateurs, or groups such as clubs, are invited to join the RSGB Experiment 5MHz Analysis Group (5MHzAG) and introduce themselves along with brief details of what skills and time they may be able to offer the project.

The Yahoo Group, apart from being an easy interface with a simple e-mail reflector capability also allows key documents that will relate to the project to be uploaded and stored.  As the project progresses we can review whether this is the ideal environment in which to work, and as necessary possibly migrate to other more sophisticated virtual working platforms. Virtual working is not to everyone's taste, and is a technique which needs to be carefully fostered and supported.  We may thus agree to set up regular online conferences using tools such as Skype or Yahoo Messenger! for those with broadband access.  These Internet based tools will allow efficient working as well as non-licensed participation.
