5MHz Beacon manual monitoring

Reports of the signals from the 3 beacons can be carried out by counting the steps that you can hear in your receiver, and logging these is the simplest way of reporting the beacons.  The 5MHzLog, a special-to-purpose computer logging program has been developed to make this easy, either through live (real-time) logging or if you want to take paper notes first the log can be keyed in later.  For more information, please go to the Station Logging page.

Reporting on every 15 minute transmission could create a lot of work both for yourself and subsequently in consolidating the data into the database.   It is recommended that regular reports are of more value that occasional ones, so if you almost always are active at a particular time each day, or certain days of a week, please aim to create a regular report.  Statistically this should produce value, both in terms of propagation but over time on your local noise environment.  On the latter it would be useful at first to see what local noise sources, if any, are contributing to your background noise and seek to eliminate them if possible, e.g. TVs, vacuum cleaners, etc.

As well as using the data for your own analysis and experiments the 5MHz Working Group would be extremely grateful if you would e-mail the data files to  5MHz_Working_Group@rsgb.org.uk for inclusion the consolidated log database.  To avoid confusion and additional work when consolidating your logs into the database, it is requested that you give the file a unique filename, such as 3b_your callsign_ddmmyy.xls , where the last 6 digits is the date when the file commences., e.g. 3b_g3xyz_031204.xls.
