Frequently asked Questions

Where can I find a sample copy of the licence for life?

A sample copy of the licence for life can be found on Ofcom’s website [external website]. Alternatively you can contact Ofcom’s Licensing Centre on 020 7981 3131.

Where can I get more instructors’ paperwork from?
All instructors’ paperwork must be obtained from the RSGB HQ with the exception of spare CATCE forms which can be downloaded from our website [PDF file PDF file, opens in own window]

Do under 16s get a discount on the examination fee?
No, there are no discounts available for the RCE.   Current fees are as follows;
Foundation £22.50, Intermediate £27.50, Advanced £32.50.

I am a Foundation instructor but wish to upgrade to the Intermediate and Advanced levels. What should I do?
All you need to do is contact the RCE Department and let us know.  We can then upgrade you to teach the level you wish.  Please note an instructor can only teach at the level below his or her own licence, so to teach Foundation you must be licenced at Intermediate level. A full licence holder may instruct at all three levels.

As an instructor can I receive the examination papers?
No, we ideally like to send the examination papers to the first named invigilator who has made no or very little contribution to the training course.

Can I submit examination questions?
Yes, any instructor is welcome to submit examination questions, the first submission should be kept to 10 questions in order to receive feedback on house style.  More information can be found on our writing examination questions web page, or by contacting Julie Venison on rce.dept@rsgb.org.uk

Am I protected as an instructor to teach children and vulnerable adults?
The RSGB are registered with the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB).  At the moment all new instructor applications are going through the CRB process.  It is the RSGB’s ultimate aim to have all registered instructors CRB checked.
A copy of the RSGB Child Protection Guidelines is sent out with every instructor appointment pack.   Please ensure that you read these—even if you have done so already it is good to refresh your memory. A copy of the guidelines can be downloaded from our website [PDF file PDF file, opens in own window]
Never place yourself in an awkward situation; always leave doors open and try to not be left in a room in a one-on-one scenario.

How do I get my centre registered?
All examinations must be taken at an RSGB registered examination centre.  In order to get your centre registered your club must be affiliated to the RSGB with the exceptions of recognised organisations such as the Scouts or a school.
You will need to fill out an application form [PDF file PDF file, opens in own window]. Alternatively, contact RSGB HQ on 01234 832700.

If these FAQs have not answered your question please contact the RCE department by e-mail: rce.dept@rsgb.org.uk.
