Train the trainers information

The purpose of the Train the Trainers course is to offer tutors some guidance on running courses and teaching techniques.

A typical programme of the day is as follows:

Provisional Agenda
Start 09.00, finishing approximately 17.00.

Session 1
Background and essential rules etc.—this is the ‘must do stuff’ to keep the exam legal.

Session 2
Some technical questions—more to get attendees thinking about what they know. The intention is not to ‘test’ instructors or show them up if they don't know the answers. Questions are not directed at individuals and no one is ‘targeted’. At worst instructors may decide they need to ‘brush up’ a few areas or seek help in a few places.

Lunch
Approximately 12.30 for around 45 minutes.

Session 3
The teaching & learning process—this is intended to give non-teachers a grounding in teaching skills and provide a chance for attendees to share their ideas. Q&A (questions encouraged on an ‘as we go’ basis).

------------------------------------------------

Session 1
Covers the procedure for notifying RSGB HQ, Radcom, GB2RS and the local region of the proposed course. Many enrolments come from RSGB HQ so if the course is only shown on the club website, the demand will be underestimated and enrolment rather lower than might be expected.

Also covered are the procedures for requesting examination papers and the roles of the examination secretary, first named invigilator, lead instructor and the safe custody of the examination papers. The booklet Rules of Conduct, issued by the Examination Board, the Radio Communications Foundation (RCF) will be explained.

The session is interactive and questions are expected. It is the only session where any of the rules really do need to be applied, in the interests of common procedures and smooth working.

Session 2
Looks at what the tutor needs to know to successfully present a course.  It is intended to be challenging and is aimed at the technical requirements of the Advanced examination.  Nonetheless it will be light-hearted and not aimed at individuals. Any feedback will be purely the personal reflections of the individual tutors.  This session will also be highly interactive.

Session 3
Looks at course planning. The Scheme of Work is a vital document to ensure everything is covered, the students are learning and assessed, teaching aids are remembered and the course suitably timetabled. The Lesson Plan for each individual lesson is no less important to ensure all the points are covered, how they are covered, how learning is assessed and the correct resources are available. Off-the-cuff teaching can appear to work, but a well planned lesson is likely to be more enjoyable, more effective and cover all the points.

Questions and answers
The final session. Experience has shown there are a lot of ‘why’ questions and points of clarification. Some can be discussed over a pint but for every question asked there are usually ten or more wanting to know the answer. This session provides that.
